Participated in a workshop focused on fashion and textile recyclability at Lottozero in Prato, Tuscany, 23-24 May. Learned so much about mono materials, sustainable fastenings, and ways to assemble/disassemble textile products. The workshop was divided in two days and it was very interesting to meet the Lottozero team and the participants coming from different backgrounds related to art and design.
I learned that, when choosing or designing a product, it is important to focus on mono materials. Not only when it comes to the textile material, that preferably should be entirely made of one singular type, but also when it comes to the construction and how it has been assembled - threads, buttons, strings.
Ideal would be no fastenings - a seamless garment, possibly a slip-on construction. For a product in cotton, it would be ideal to use cotton strings instead of plastic buttons.
Also important to choose or create a product that has as few seams as possible, especially since the thread commonly used is acrylic because of its high resistance, in order to make it easier to disasseble and recycle.
The workshop was very inspiring and would love to come back to Lottozero very soon.
